The post-divorce syndrome for Indians

I have read many articles on what to expect after divorce especially when it comes to friends, but still none of them could have prepared me for the Indian family reaction. Also because most of those articles were written by non-Indians, and we know we are a different breed/species in itself.  To provide a simple background, mine was not an abusive marriage, and my ex-husband is actually a gem of a person. So it was a rather difficult decision to make as we were simply not compatible. Now how do you explain this to an Indian society? Compatibility? What is that? What am I even talking about right? He’s a nice guy, doesn't hit me, nor abuses me. He doesn't even cheat on me and my in-laws are lovely people. What on earth could drive me away? Well, I’m not answering that. All I’ll say is, we are not compatible and rest is between me and him. But this write-up is not about the why, it’s more about what followed. Surprise #1 - PARENTS My parents were extremely suppor...

Crazy world we live in!

They don’t call you crazy           When you are an accountant They don’t call you crazy           When you are a mechanic Nor do they call you crazy           If you are a doctor, an engineer, a carpenter or a cleaner But they call you crazy           When you make music for the soul When you create art from your mind… and not sell to the world           When you play the beat of the heart When you sing the song of the devil           Or when you surrender to the universe You are no different from me yet I am far away I touch you… feel you… understand you You touch me… well… can’t feel me For I am thin air… lost in the fair           ...

Dubai International Airport V/S Doha International Airport

So Doha has less shops as opposed to Dubai… they may even be really tiny comparatively, but hats off to their services. Very recently I was travelling to Qatar (I know its not the most exciting country, but duty calls – family duties) for “my partner in crimes” cousins engagement rituals. Yes, for those who are puzzled, Hindus have a ritual for practically everything, including engagements. We were travelling with my adorably cool maternal grand-ma… when I say cool, I really mean it, but not a smoking/drinking way cool, she is cool by nature… now, she is an old lady (which I never fail to remind her, though she wont accept the fact :p) who has innumerous problems. She is quite active, but lately her knees are giving her hell, which means she cant walk a lot (though she still danced for my cousins mehendi). Now, coming back to why I feel Doha airport was better than Dubai airport. 1               At Dubai ...

Misinterpretation of the Bhagavad Gita Part II

Will I never cease to meet such people? I was having a few drinks with friends, well, not mine, but my man’s friends. I met another gentleman who just believes in Hinduism blindly. Now, just to clear the air, I’m not against ignorant people, but I do object when they try to sell their ignorance to me. Did you really expect me to buy that story? Somehow, during the final meal (the most precious meal of all, food after alcohol), we touched on the topic of a particular painting. The painting of Arjun on his rath. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about here’s a pic. Now, the story I was told by this gentleman of blind faith, is if you keep this painting at your residence it will be the cause of fights between the father and son of the house. And that is also the reason why most Hindu’s don’t keep this in their house. So am I to conclude that those who don’t have such a painting in their house have blissfully pe...

Misinterpretation of the Bhagavad Gita?

I realize how controversial this subject can get, however, since comments to my column are not really allowed, you are welcome to have an open conversation with me on twitter. During a recent chat, over the weekend, with this pregnant lady, whom I usually meet but never really speak to, we touched on the topic of her really greasy hair, which she is now losing. Well, if you are from a conservative Hindu family I’m sure you must have heard of the fact that Hindu women, when pregnant, are not allowed to wash their hair for the first 7 months of their pregnancy (icky, but true). I really got interested in the subject, as I’m to marry soon and a baby will follow sooner a later, so I asked a few elders around. One of the explanations I received is mentioned below: “The birth of a child is also considered to be the re-birth of our ancestors. By washing her hair, the lady is also washing away any soul who wishes to enter the baby.” I wasn’t particularly satisfied with t...
